As may be guessed from the Navigation Bar, the site includes 4 basic areas, namely Sailing, Flying, Local (UK) and Abroad. Sailing covers some of the holiday cruises I have undertaken both with my own boat Saga and a friend’s larger yacht, Stravaig. Our Solstice Cruises have been particularly memorable. However, all sailing in a small yacht is an experience that I was not familiar with until I turned 40. What a waste of the years before that! Abroad covers our holidays to various ‘airts n’ pairts. We now actually go on holidays to foreign parts which makes a change from our younger years. I think the economics of all the travel companies we use would disintegrate were it not for the silver haired brigade. Local of course covers UK events mostly and the odd short break. Some items may be of interest.
Welcome Born and brought up in Kirkwall city, (see image above including cathedral) capital of Orkney, the archipelago has always been‘in my affections’. I left Orkney at a tender age and initially pursued a career in the RAF which was very rewarding. To escape an eventually pending desk job, later I pursued a ‘career’ in civil aviation which proved almost as varied and challenging, in some ways, as military flying. Now fully retired, my main interests include sailing in a time consuming old boat, photography, editing and publishing The Growler , a quarterly magazine of the Shackleton Association, www.thegrowler.org.uk , website creation,-but not the Growler site-a little bit of holiday travel and messing about with computers. Don’t take the site seriously (as if you would)-it is just me having a bit of fun and testing some new ideas. Oh, I nearly forgot. I cut the grass too, and take out the bins, sometimes even putting them back!
